Happy Decorating!  

1.  DON’T choose furniture that doesn’t fit.   Before purchasing furniture, be sure to sketch out your room dimensions.   This will give you a good indication as to what size furniture will fit proportionately in your room.  

Tip:  Remember to allow enough room for walking and traffic patterns.  

2. DON’T choose paint first.  Paint is available in any color imaginable, therefore; your options are limitless.

Tip: Choose your flooring, upholstery, and fabrics first! 

3. DON’T purchase something because it’s in stock now.  Most interior design firms and furniture stores allow you to special order any furniture piece.  Meaning you can choose the fabric and finish of your choice. 

Tip:  Most interior design firms offer free consultations!   Take advantage of this. 

4. DON’T display every personal treasure.  Less is more!  Pick the pieces that mean the most to you, display those and store the rest.  

Tip: Consider swapping personal items in and out from time to time. 

5. DON’T forget to identify or create a focal point in each room.  This is something visually appealing such as a fireplace, a painting, or the largest furniture piece.   It should be the first thing your eye is drawn to in a room.  

Tip: Creating this focal point will add instant comfort to any room.

Keep in mind, there are 4 types of lighting: ambient, task, accent, and decorative.  

Ambient lighting fills the room with soft, general light.  Task lighting is designed for a particular task, such as reading.  Accent lighting is direct light that typically highlights an object or sets a mood.  Decorative lighting, our interior designer’s favorite type of lighting, provides a decorative element to a room…something that catches the eye!   This can often be the focal point of a room, such as a chandelier.  

Making use of all 4 types of lighting will create a wonderful ambiance. 

Tip:  If you want a room to appear larger, direct soft light amongst all four walls.  On the other hand, if you want a room to appear smaller and more intimate, direct a few soft pools of light on certain objects or areas throughout the room.
